Once again Randy and I had the privilege of visiting a foster family’s home shortly after their new placement. It was first for this family after 9 years of marriage and no children, they were excited to welcome us over to see their new additions. As Randy rang the doorbell, the door opened slowly to reveal the most beautiful blonde haired blue-eyed girl in the world. What is your name? Randy asked as he bent over to greet her. “M———-” she said as her eyes got huge with excitement to see the little doll carriage we had brought over for her. She was radiant with white hair and piercing blue eyes that were as blue as the sky. The smile on her face could melt anyone’s heart. As we continued on in the door with the car seats, stroller and high chair, our eyes both became affixed on a little boy who scrambled from around the corner. He was wearing a t-shirt and a diaper. His eyes were as blue as his sister’s as he let out a huge smile. “This is my brother D———-”, she said with a motherly concern. It didn’t take but a moment for Randy and I to notice his precious little face covered in bruises. I have seen many bruises, but never like this. They were not the kind of bruises you see from being punched, but they were deep hand-shaped bruises from his little face being held down. As we continued to greet him, it got much worse. As we scrolled with our eyes down his body, we both noticed his sweet little legs which were also covered in bruises. Deep, black bruises from the top of his legs all the way down to his feet. It was honestly the worst case of bruising I had ever seen. As I whispered to the foster mom “these bruises are horrific”, she said “you think these are bad, you should see his bottom”…Our heart instantly broke AGAIN.. I though back to how many times I’d been at foster placement and how many beautiful children GOD had redeemed!! I just knew these kids had a very special place in God’s heart. The foster mom proceeded to tell me how the little girl had gotten up that morning and went to the couch to lay down. She patted the couch to retrieve her little brother to lay beside her…As he came and laid down, she let the foster mom know that her brother wasn’t feeling good today because “of his bruises” she said. It was obvious that little M———- had not only witnessed the beatings, but had been the only mommy her brother really had…It was heartbreaking, agonizing and extremely sad. As we left their home and drove off, I told Randy that I believe God has saved the most beautiful kids for fostering and adoption. “GOD must have a really special plan for those beautiful babies” I told him as we headed home.
It was all I could think about the rest of the night as I recounted the visit. How could ANYONE even a drug addict, beat an innocent child like that? How could ANYONE take out that much anger on sweet baby? The only thing I could reason was that this abuser must have felt this way about their own self…So much self-hatred, oppression, hurt and anger inside of them, that they had to explode on someone!!
This morning as I woke, I thought about researching the little boys name. What does it mean? As I scrolled through the computer names I found his name meaning and was astounded…his Native American name means friend and ally. A tribal name that is special to the Native Americans. I smiled at GOD! God created this boy to be a warrior, and a friend, a close ally. Praise God at how HE care enough about each and every child to give them a mighty namesake even as their parents are unaware!! I felt the the Lord was saying that D——— will be a close friend of mine, an ally…and that he will be raised by godly parents who will gird him with the truth. I pray this comes to pass!!
God has never forgotten us or left us either. As we strive to care for these precious children, remember that GOD has called you to a very special calling. A calling not many people can answer. It is not easy, but it is So rewarding!! May God Bless you all today as you strive to be the best parent you can be!
